West Australian-based trouvere Emjay Angeni is no stranger to experimentation and reinvention. Overtures of laid-back reggae broadcast elements of her still-strong Kiwi roots, which over time have been inflected by the soft, storied-style of Australian Folk and an ongoing affinity with Jazz, Blues and World Music.
A Jazz School drop-out, who once fronted an NZ Indie-Pop band and has featured as a soloist and backing vocalist with various South West acts, Emjay has had the pleasure of supporting a diverse array of major artists including NZ’s The Mint Chicks, So So Modern and The Checks, and Australia’s Xavier Rudd, Little Quirks, Band of Frequencies and Blue Child Collective.
Earning notoriety within her home state of WA as she clocks up frequent and ever more enchanting shows, including well-received performances at Fluffstival, Nukara Festival and WAMFEST’s regional showcase, Emjay is praised for her easy on-stage manner and ability to draw audiences into her own private universe. Less attached to ‘being someone’ in the world and, rather, inclined towards letting music “flow through her,” there is a quiet confidence, grace and power that emanates from this 5’2” giant.
Currently recording her first full-length album, “Dreamtime Arrows,” Emjay’s name seems to be popping up all over the place as she readies herself to melt hearts and capture imaginations worldwide with her unique, soulful blend of light-hearted storytelling and music to move you.
